Pupil Premium
What Is Pupil Premium?
The Pupil Premium is additional funding provided to schools in England to help improve education outcomes for disadvantaged pupils. Evidence shows that children facing disadvantage may encounter extra challenges in reaching their potential and can, on average, perform less well than their peers.
At Kells Lane Primary School, this funding helps us to ensure that every child can Find their Remarkable regardless of background or circumstance. We are committed to using our Pupil Premium funding effectively to narrow gaps, raise attainment, and provide every child with the opportunities they need to succeed both academically and personally.
Research from the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) shows that pupil premium spending is most effective when schools adopt a tiered approach, targeting spending across three key areas — with a particular focus on high-quality teaching. Read the Education Endowment Foundation’s (EEF) pupil premium guide for information about the tiered approach to spending.

Our Tiered Approach
1. Teaching
We invest in the highest quality teaching and professional development for all staff, ensuring every child benefits from excellent classroom practice. This includes:
-
Ongoing training and professional learning for teachers and support staff
-
Recruitment and retention of high-quality staff
-
Strong support for Early Career Teachers
2. Targeted Academic Support
Some pupils require additional support to meet their individual learning needs. This includes:
-
One-to-one and small-group tuition
-
High-quality interventions in reading, writing, and mathematics
-
Specialist support, such as emotional regulation using the Thrive Approach
3. Wider Approaches
We recognise that non-academic factors can significantly affect a child’s success in school. Therefore, we also invest in:
-
Pastoral and emotional wellbeing support, including Family Thrive
-
Help with the cost of enrichment opportunities, including educational trips and visits
