Values and Ethos

Our school motto

Our vision

Our school’s vision is to inspire and empower every child to discover their remarkable potential. Finding your remarkable means recognising your strengths, talents and abilities, and using them to make a positive impact on your own life and the lives of others. It’s about embracing challenges, pushing boundaries, and reaching new heights. Our vision is for every child to uncover their remarkable qualities and make a positive impact on their lives and the world around them.

Mission Statement

At Kells Lane Primary School, our mission is to provide a nurturing and inclusive environment that is child-centred, ensuring that every child has a voice and feels heard. We foster a strong sense of community where acceptance and belonging are paramount. Our primary goal is to create a safe and happy space where all children can thrive and reach their full potential. We believe in celebrating diversity and promoting inclusivity, encouraging every child to embrace their unique qualities. Through collaborative efforts, we empower our children to develop a strong sense of self-worth and respect for others, cultivating a community that values kindness and empathy. Together, we strive to create a foundation for lifelong learning, where each child’s individuality is cherished and their contributions are valued.

Our values

Be Brave

Be Curious

Be Ambitious

Be Empowered

Be Resilient

At Kells Lane Primary School, we embrace a set of core values that shape our community and guide our children’s growth. These values include being brave, curious, ambitious, empowered, and resilient. We believe in encouraging our children to be courageous in facing challenges, to be inquisitive and constantly seek knowledge, to have ambitious goals and work towards achieving them, to feel empowered to make a difference, and to develop the strength and adaptability to overcome obstacles. These values form the foundation of our educational approach and inspire our children to become confident, happy and lifelong learners who are well prepared for life in modern Britain.

Equality Objectives Statement

We welcome our duties under the Equality Act 2010. The school’s general duties, with regards to equality are:

  • Eliminating discrimination
  • Fostering good relationships
  • Advancing equality of opportunity

We will not discriminate against, harass or victimise any pupil, prospective pupil, or other member of the school community because of their:

  • Sex
  • Age
  • Race
  • Disability
  • Religion or belief
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender reassignment
  • Pregnancy or maternity
  • Marriage and civil partnership

We aim to promote pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, with special emphasis on promoting equality and diversity, and eradicating prejudicial incidents for pupils and staff. Our school is committed to not only eliminating discrimination, but also increasing understanding and appreciation for diversity.

Being part of Britain

The importance of rules and laws, whether they be those that govern our school or our country, are referred to and reinforced often, such as in assemblies and when reflecting on behaviour choices. At the start of the school year, each class discusses and sets its own Class Charter, a set of principles that are clearly understood by all and seen to be necessary to ensure that every class member is able to learn in a safe and ordered environment.

Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken. These values are reinforced in different ways:

  • visits from authorities such as the police and fire service
  • during Religious Education, when rules for particular faiths are thought about
  • during other school subjects, where there is respect and appreciation for different rules – in a sports lesson, for example.

Democracy

Children, parents and staff have many opportunities for their voices to be heard at Kells Lane Primary. Democracy is central to how we operate.

We are part of the Smart Schools Council in which we have been recognised for the work we do on raising the profile of pupil voice. The election of our Communication Team (school council representatives) reflects our British electoral system and demonstrates democracy in action: candidates make speeches, pupils consider characteristics important for an elected representative, pupils vote in secret using ballot boxes etc. Made up from pupils across school, the Communication Team meet regularly to discuss whole school topics and issues. You can find out more about the work and impact our school council have on their website page.

Pupils are always listened to by adults and are taught to listen carefully and with concern to each other, respecting the right of every individual to have their opinions and voices heard. We encourage pupils to take ownership of not only their school but also of their own learning and progress. This encourages a heightened sense of both personal and social responsibility and is demonstrated on a daily basis by our pupils.

Rule of Law

The importance of rules and laws, whether they be those that govern our school or our country, are referred to and reinforced often, such as in assemblies and when reflecting on behaviour choices.

Individual Liberty

Alongside rules and laws, we promote freedom of choice and the right to respectfully express views and beliefs. Through the provision of a safe, supportive environment and empowering education, we provide boundaries for our young pupils to make choices safely.

Our pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are taught how to exercise these safely, such as in our e-safety and PHSE lessons.

Respect & Tolerance

Our pupils know and understand that it is expected and imperative that respect is shown to everyone, whatever differences we may have, and to everything, whether it is a school resource, a religious belief or whatever. Children learn that their behaviour choices have an effect on their own rights and those of others. All members of the school community should treat each other with respect.

Specific examples of how we at Kells Lane Primary enhance pupils understanding and respect for different faiths and beliefs are:

  • through Religious Education, PHSE and other lessons where we might develop awareness and appreciation of other cultures – in English through fiction and in Art by considering culture from other parts of the world, for example
  • enjoying a depth of study during Inspiring Visitor days, where sometimes we will celebrate and enjoy learning about the differences in countries and cultures around the word (whilst at other times we might consider groups or individuals who might be vulnerable in some way, such as those with a disability)
  • equality assemblies and ‘Show Racism the Red Card’ workshops
